Christmas in the prairies.

December 27, 2007 Leave a comment
It’s been fun here in Edmonton. Many good Christmas things happening.

It started with a gathering of ex-fort people. (Well, mostly ex-fort people – one is not an ex, she’s still there.) That’s the picture in the restaurant. By the way, that restaurant had the best pancakes I’ve ever had in a restaurant.

Then there were family gatherings a plenty. My dad’s family came over on Christmas Eve. We went to my borther’s on Christmas Day. The second photo is of us at my brother’s house (I’m the one in the antlers). My brother keeps his house at 64 deg – that’s 17.7 deg for we Canadians. That is so wrong. Normally, I keep my house around 23. At my brother’s, I was wearing two jackets and freezing! My sister-in-law’s mother was wandering around the house in bare feet and my nephew was in shorts and a t-shirt though. Very odd that.

Finally we did the annual Cribbage Tournament at my mom’s cousin’s house. I can’t find anyone to play crib with out east so I only play once a year at this tournament. My mom won the tournament last year. I came in second last this year. But it was great fun. A house full of crazy indians is always fun 🙂

Oh and for all those people wondering who still uses iceberg lettuce – it’s Albertans. Both my mom and my sister-in-law have it. Must be a prairie thing.

Now I must go and pack my luggage to come home. My stuff fits fine but the DS’s will be difficult. I think she got more stuff than I did.

I’m a true redneck now.

My mother has a new hobby: target shooting. She took me to her rifle club (she’s a card carrying member) with her friend, Jim, and we shot paper targets all afternoon using bullets that my mother made herself (she so butch sometimes).

It was great!

It was loud and smelled like gunpowder but I shot very well for a first timer (although there was the shooting gallery at fort edmonton park…). My mother was very proud. We shot a 38 357 Magnum (I have no idea what that means).

If I’m ever attacked by a paper target, I’ll come out on top – I’ve been trained.

My “vacation”

December 19, 2007 Leave a comment

I took Monday through Thursday of this week off even though I don’t fly home until Friday. I had tonnes of vacation days I had to use or lose.

As I was snowed in at the DS’s all weekend, Monday morning was spent shovelling her walk and then shovelling my car out. The local plow had plowed all the snow behind my car even though it was legally parked. So there was a foot of snow on top of it and about two feet of snow piled around it. Then I went and finished my Christmas shopping.

While shopping, I got two calls from work. One was one of my analysts resigning and one was a scheduling inquiry. Then I went home and shovelled the snow off my driveway. There is a pile of snow in front of my house that is about shoulder high. And yes, I went to my physiotherapist in the afternoon.

Then you’ll be thrilled to know, I finished my christmas cards, did some more work and finally relaxed (about 8pm).

Tuesday, I got up and did some work, and then went to do more Christmas shopping (forgot my nephew) and mail my mother’s birthday package (yes, her birthday is in August), then I came home and did more work.

Then I went to the DS’s and primed the drywall in her basement until about 8:30pm. This morning, I drove home and worked and I will go back to the DS’s for more priming at 3pm. I’m hoping I’ll only have to do more work from home on Wednesday.

This is my vacation.

The good news is: while I was priming the drywall, the DS was upstairs working on other renos. One of the things she did was install a key hanger. This required drilling holes into the drywall, hammering in anchors and screwing the key hanger in. I taught her how to install anchors when we put in the blinds in the bedrooms last week. Now she can do it on her own without ANY help from me. I just taught her to fish. If this keeps up, she will be a reno queen and maybe I’ll be able to spend my vacation just doing work.

Black Market Wii

I bought a Wii about a month ago. I haven’t opened it yet because I went to Phoenix for work, then did renos at the DS’s place, then was busy or not at home.

My boss told me today that he saw they were getting $1000 for Wii’s on ebay. I’m thinking I can wait until after Christmas to play with my Wii. I should sell it for $1000. I looked on Craig’s list to see if anyone else in Toronto was selling one (since I don’t have a PayPal account anymore). They are selling them for $400 with games there.

That’s not even close to $1000. People in Toronto must be smarter.

Facebook is genius!

December 10, 2007 Leave a comment

I took a personality test on Facebook today. I saw that the DS had taken it and it looked interesting so I took it too. As it turned out, she was my friend whom I was most similar to, however, that "similarity" was only 33%! I matched my other friends even less.

But you know what? It’s kind of accurate. And as the first point about me being flexible and worry-free contradicts the  third point about me stressing easily, which is totally me.

Temperament – Flexible
Nothing seems to bother you – you sail through life crisis free. It’s not that your life doesn’t have it’s ups and downs, it’s just that you handle everything without unnecessary drama and antics. You approach each day fresh, not worrying about yesterday or tomorrow. You are confident that you can handle anything that comes your way and experience has show that you are absolutely right about this.

Interests – Simple
You are continaully pursuing a simpler and less complicated life – you don’t allow yourself to fall victim to all of the "should do’s" that society continually bombards you with. You are thoughtful about your life choices and think in terms of yourself, others and the world in which we live. You have a great sense that we are part of something much bigger and we must be good to others, if we want others and the world to be good to us.

Amusement – Thoughtful
You are easily stressed out and overwhelmed – you need to take care of yourself first and foremost. Because you tend to be self-reflective, you know your limits quite well and must remember to not exceed those limits. When you overwhelm your life with obligations and responsibilities, you tend to shut down and go into yourself even further. Take some time to find your serentiy and kick back your feet.

Passion – Physical
You are a cuddle bug – from a warm hug shared with your best friend to steamy sex with your partner, you enjoy every bit of human contact you can get. You demonstrate your love for others most fluidly through physical one-on-one contact and you feel most loved when you are being touched. You feel disconnected when you are physically isolated from others. You’re a people person and a lover of all things human.

Christmas twirling

Here is a link to a video of the Streetsville Santa Claus Parade. Streetsville is a part of Mississauga (about 10 minutes north of my place).

We marched in this parade last weekend in November and we occur at about the 2:30 point in the video. It’s not too interesting in terms of a splashy routine but we are actually in synch, which is rare.

And yes, in true flaming fashion – it’s a Cher song.
