I got a wheeler dealer.

There has been massive construction at the DS’s for that last couple of months. For the first week when the majority of the demolition was being done, there was a big dumpster in her driveway for the construction rubble. I’m sure her condo association was thrilled.

For the last few months, there has been no dumpster and all the construction rubble was on her front lawn. (Take that, Condo assoc!) We were told that if we got rid of it, we’d have to load up the DS’s van, drive it to the local dump  and pay to dump it. AND we’d have to do this at midnight because any other time would take forever due to line ups.

She called 1-800-got-junk to see how much it would cost to haul it away and it was too much. She called a number from the local community newspaper to get an estimate. They showed up and looked at the pile of rubble on her lawn while she was at work and said "it will cost $270".

The DS says, "too much" and hangs up.

They call her back immediately and say, "$175".

The DS says, "too much" and hangs up.

They call her back and say, "what did you have in mind?"

She replies, "$120". They hang up.

Then they call back and say, "OK. $120."

She asks when they’ll haul it away and they say, "in about 5 minutes".

She came home to a clean yard and I don’t have to load garbage to the dump at midnight.

I love this woman.

Mississauga has a green bin system for organics. They give you a big green bin on wheels to put at the curb for pickup and a little bin to put in your kitchen. You put organic waste in the kitchen bin and then transfer to the big bin.

The best way to do this is to put a little bag in the kitchen bin and then when it’s full, take the kitchen bag and carry the organic waste to the big bin outside. Then you put a new little bag in the kitchen bin.

Now, the City says you have to use special bags for this – putting plastic bags in the organic bin defeats the purpose. So I’ve been buying the "biodegradable" kitchen organic bags and using that and have had no problems.

Last time I went grocery shopping, Glad was having a sale on their "green bags for organic kitchen bins" and so I bought them. They were pretty and green and worked very well. I filled about five up and tossed them all in the big bin for pickup.

Well, I found a sticker on my green bin saying they won’t pick up my organic waste because it’s not in a proper bag! Apparently, the Glad "green bags for organic waste" are plastic!

So not only do I have bags I can’t use and have to go buy more "proper" bags, I have to empty the current bags that have 3 weeks worth of organic, decomposing waste in them so the garbage guys will pick it up. Makes me just want to throw it in the regular garbage. Now that definitely defeats the purpose, no?

Haircut motivation

Ok – I finally got my hair cut. I even waited about 10 minutes for my turn.

And the reason I did all this despite my busy day was because the DS threatened me – I had to cut my hair or she was going to curl it and take a picture to show my mother.

Sorry for not writing.

I can’t tell you how busy I’ve been. Work has been insane. I was in Phoenix from Sunday to Wednesday last week interviewing staff for that office. When home, I’ve been helping the DS with her renovations (as much as I can with my pooched back). Parade season for Christmas is also starting and I’m currently doing my laundry.

I was so swamped last Thursday that I had to book my dental appointment (which had already been postponed twice due to my crazy life) right before my osteo appointment. Then my dentist discovered two little cavities that had to be filled! I had no time for cavities! Luckily my dentist is very cooperative and a bit of a speed demon. He filled them both in less than 10 minutes. Of course, it helped that I didn’t get any freezing. Yeah baby – speed dental work is awesome.

My back has been miserable. My osteopath believes it’s degenerative disc disease (I researched it online and it’s neither degenerative nor a disease) but everyone I know thinks it’s a pinched nerve. I have a physiotherapy appointment tomorrow. We will find out. I have renos to continue and flags to twirl. No time for illness.

And I haven’t had a haircut in at least.. um.. I’d like to say three months but maybe it’s only been two. I almost got it cut today on my way home at the walk in place but there were people waiting and I had no time to wait.

Maybe I’ll write when I have more time… in 2009.
