I’m worth money!.. well maybe just train tickets…

My flag twirling group normally marches in non-Pride parades to raise money to do the Pride parade peformances. Last year, we marched in maybe five parades like the Oshawa Fiesta Festival and Welland Rose Parade to raise money to pay for parades like Rochester and Montreal Pride.

This year, we only did two paying parades (both on Canada Day) as the Oshawa parade was cancelled and the other parades didn’t have enough money to pay us for appearing. (And let me tell you, I found a message board where someone from Port Hope voiced disappointment that we weren’t at their parade this year, so we were missed!)

Anyway, because we did fewer paying parades, it meant we had to cancel our London Pride and Ottawa Pride appearances.

London offered to reimburse our costs, so we did go to London. However, Ottawa NEVER pays performers so we didn’t expect to go.

As it turns out, when our General Manager called to cancel our appearance, the parade organizers said that they had advertised our participation and had a great response so they offered to give us a bursary AND free VIA train tickets for all marchers and two volunteers!

Oh yeah. We’re rock stars.
